Evesham Uni-ted were bundled out of the FA Cup when Bridgwater Town won 3-1 in the first qualifying round at Common Road.

It was a pitiful display by United who bowed out without even putting up a fight.

Bridgwater, who play in the Western League Premier Division, could hardly believe their luck as they faced an Evesham side more interested in arguing amonst themselves than concentrating on the job in hand.

Bridgwater pick up £7,500 for their efforts and now travel to Merthyr Tydfil in the second qualifying round.

United on the other hand, face some tricky league games in the coming weeks and with the commitment of many of the side under question manager Phil Mullen has some big problems to sort out.

It all started to go wrong for United on 31 minutes. Darren Steadman was caught out of position when attempting to clear and Dave Pope converted into an unguarded net from 20 yards.

The closest United came to scoring all afternoon was when Shaun Strange headed Andy Smith's cross against his own upright and the ball rebounded into the grateful areas of Town 'keeper Kevin Hurd.

Bridgwater's Pete Knox, who along with fellow striker Chris Young had a field day against the United defence, should have added a second before half-time but shot wide with only Steadman to beat.

Substitute Steve Taylor, who had just replaced Phil Preedy, brought some cheer to the United fans when he equalised on 58 minutes, heading home Mark Wolsey's cross.

The goal failed to lift United and they fell behind for a second time in the 76th minute. Knox made light work of beating Matt Gardiner and rounded Steadman to tap home.

Seven minutes later, Bridgewater scored a third and sent a sorry-looking United out of the competition. Paul Haywood struck a free kick against the United wall and Young fastened onto the loose ball and side footed home from six yards.
