AN HGV driver has been banned from the road after being caught behind the wheel of a BMW for which he was not insured.

David Cliff insisted the car was not registered in his name and so thought that his policy covered him.

But the police thought otherwise and took the father-of-two to court.

Mark Soper, prosecuting at Droitwich magistrates, said officers stopped the 33-year-old in Blackpole Road on Thursday, April 12.

"It was a simple spot check at 7.20am," he revealed.

Giving evidence, Cliff said he had a cover note for another car, which stated he was insured for any vehicle, so long as he did not own it.

"I didn't know I wasn't insured. The BMW wasn't registered to me yet, so I thought I was OK," he said.

Cliff told magistrates he was an HGV driver, but had been laid off a week ago.

"Driving's all I've ever known," said Cliff, of Birch Avenue, Tolladine. "I'll have to get something else now.

"I've got a girlfriend and two kids to support. I've got an interview next week for a job doing maintenance on lorries, but I need my licence for moving them around."

He admitted he drove the BMW with no insurance but, despite telling the bench he had to drive his partner to a chiropractor twice a week, he was banned for six months under the totting up procedure and fined £120.
