THE captain and crew of a Continental Airlines jet were among a number of Americans forced to extend their stay at the Shakespeare Hotel, Chapel Street, Stratford.
The crew, who regularly stop at the hotel between flights into Birmingham International Airport, were waiting for news of when they will be able to fly again.
Shakespeare Hotel manager John Reynolds they had a number of American guests staying at the hotel, including some from New York. "Most of them have been able to call home and a couple have had bad news," he said. "There are some distraught people around," he added.
Moat House Hotel operations manager Mark Thacker described the mood as "sombre" at the hotel in Bridgefoot, which had about 90 American tourists.
He said staff at the hotel, which was due to welcome another group of American guests, were doing what they could to help.
