"DRAB and dull" Malvern needs a burst of coloured lights to give the town a bit of holiday atmosphere.
That was the view of at least some of the town traders, who were trying to put pressure on Malvern Urban District Council to provide them, in September 1951.
The Chamber of Commerce had already approached the council for bunting and flags but was refused, when a past president, Mr E D Bowman, made his suggestion. Coloured fairy lights in the town would make the place brighter and more welcoming, he said.
"Mr Bowman declared Malvern too drab, too dull and too dingy," reported the Gazette. "It had been dull long enough and he would like to see lights on the Beacon as in past days, so that the town might be seen as far away as Worcester."
