CLEARLY, Paul Jeffery is a young man who likes to think that he is shocking his elders. He will never shock me - I have seen too much and I am no chicken.

However, I am somewhat appalled by the shallow nature of some aspects of modern life.

These pop songs soar to the top of the "charts" for about six weeks and then they are forgotten.

Magnificence

In contrast, the works of Shakespeare and Elgar will live for ever, as will the songs of 1914-1918 and 1939-1945.

Nothing would be achieved by tying Mr Jeffery to a chair and compelling him to listen to Elgar's music - he would not appreciate such magnificence.

Away with you, Paul Jeffery - go and skateboard on the motorway!
