WITH a quiet confidence, Upton's first XV can take pride in their performances so far this season as the team builds for a first round cup tie against Bredon tomorrow (Saturday) at home.

UPTON 31pts, STOW II 0

The 'Bethell' tournament held two weeks ago at Bromyard, also gave Upton captain Rob Heeley the benchmark needed to test players' fitness levels and commitment. Last Saturday, Stow did little to dent Upton's pride, leaving the home side a clear opportunity to demonstrate its true potential.

A satisfied Upton captain, Rob Heeley, said: "Saturday's performance was still not 100 per cent but showed improvement and bodes well for the coming season.

"There is still plenty of work to do as we prepare for a number of very important league fixtures. This team could be very good indeed, but we have a long road to travel before the season ends."

Although not at full strength, Upton continued to blood some new players in prop Ed Whitman, full back John Rose and debutante winger Rich Williams. All three came through with flying colours but it was more established team members that controlled the game for Upton.

Playing on a new pitch with a different wind direction, Upton had to take advantage of the elements in the first half and did so.

Upton roared into a 24-0 half time lead with scores from Brad Raymond (two tries), winger Glen Price (one try) and three conversions and a penalty from Heeley.

The second half was a much closer affair as Stow played with the wind and made it difficult for the home side to gain enough territory and therefore play flowing rugby. However, Upton did manage one more score late on when Williams looped Raymond and made a half break to put winger Rich Williams clear. However, as the cover came across Williams unselfishly popped it inside to the supporting Raymond for his hat-trick. Heeley capped a good display with the boot to convert to make the final score 31-0.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Upton entertains Bredon in the first round of the RFU Junior Cup (3pm). All support will be welcome.
