STOURPORT welterweight Ernie Smith found himself in action at Sheffield's Ponds Forge Leisure Centre last night after stepping in at short notice to face unbeaten Bexleyheath prospect Leo O'Reilly over six rounds.

O'Reilly who had won his first eight pro fights, is already being tipped for future glory and he was soon into his stride, landing with two solid solid left hooks.

Not everything went against Smith in the early stages though, he defended well and exploded across the ring towards his opponent whenever the chance arose. But the tide began to turn in the second round, however, when O'Reilly's left jab began to mark his face and by the start of the fourth there was quite a swelling under his right eye.

Two more solid lefts started Smith's nose bleeding and despite jabbing well he found himself on the receiving end of some excellent work from the Bexleyheath man. Smith can have no complaints at referee Phil Edwards 40-36 score at the end of six punishing rounds.
