A MALVERN mother has slammed moves by a town supermarket to consider closing its creche in order to extend cafe facilities.

The creche at Safeway, in Roman Way, is widely used by mums who leave their children in safety while doing their shopping.

But bosses at the store could axe the facility following a consultation exercise currently taking place.

Emma Davison, aged 32, from nearby Coronation Road, said the creche had played a vital role for her since moving to the area from Yorkshire.

"My son Lewie has been going there since we moved last year and it's been a godsend for me," she explained.

"I made friends through it, Lewie made friends through it. It's been a lifeline for me. I knew this was on the cards and it means that when I go shopping he'll have to go shopping with me."

She said other childcare facilities had long waiting lists.

Safeway has set up a special hotline number for parents to comments on the proposal and says a decision will be made when the 30-day consultation period is over. That decision is expected during the first week of October.

Seema Chandarana, a spokesman for the store, said: "No decision has been made but there is a consultation going on with users and staff.

"We are looking at space and the demand from the local community. That's what we are going through on this consultation."
