THE first phase of work to create a new 40-space car park for Malvern town centre is now well under way.

Peter McLaren, property services manager at Malvern Hills District Council, confirmed this week that demolition had begun on the site behind the Unicorn, on Belle Vue Terrace.

He said: "Demolition of the former exhaust, tyre and battery centre will last for the rest of this month and is due to be finished by September 28.

"We have received tenders for construction of the car park but they are still being evaluated and we cannot announce the results as yet.

"The aim is for that to follow on from the demolition, with building work due to take about 12 weeks, depending on the contractors and on the weather."

MHDC has a budget of £195,000 for the work and has agreed to create an access ramp to land behind Robson Ward Kitchens, which could provide up to 100 more spaces at a later date.
