Judging by the weakness of M Kershaw's argument for Britain's continued membership of the European Union (Postbag, September 7), he is no doubt against open debate on this, the biggest political issue of our day. His only suggested benefit in our membership is that the "European Movement" has kept the peace in Europe for the last 50 years. Wrong, it is the strength of NATO that has kept the peace! And history has shown that attempting to unite individual nation states into political union ultimately ends in unrest.
His other point is that people who do not share his view are xenophobic, or have a dislike of foreigners. Wrong again! We just do not want political union with them. We want the right to govern ourselves; we do not want to take part in an outdated dream of European megalomaniacs to build a super-state powerful enough to match the USA. Let's look to the future, and get out now before it is too late!
