A WORCESTER man will be stepping up the pace when he takes part in Sunday's Great North Run in aid of the Acorns Children's Hospice.

Veteran road race walker Garnett Alderson, of Rainbow Hill, aims to walk the arduous 13 miles from Gateshead to South Shields in two hours 30 minutes, shaving three minutes off the time he recorded last year.

The 59-year-old, a former member of Worcester Athletic Club's road racing team, hopes to raise several hundreds of pounds for the charity that benefits the granddaughter of a friend of his.

"I no longer have time to compete so I'm racing to raise money for charity," said Mr Alderson, who runs 13 miles every Sunday and trains at the One On One Fitness Centre, in Bromyard Road, St John's.

Mr Alderson, who won the Worcester Carnival 50-mile road race three times in succession during the early 1970s, has also raised money for the county's air ambulance and RNIB New College, Worcester.
