GOLFERS have upped the competition in Bewdley with an annual cup for the town's clubs.

Wharton Park, Bewdley Pines and Little Lakes joined together for a Ryder Cup-style event which proved a great success.

And the idea may well evolve with other Wyre Forest clubs apparently interested in getting involved.

Hosts Wharton Park, whose member Terry Colley came up with the idea, took advantage of home territory by winning.

Little Lakes finished second and will host the competition next year which is for players who have contributed to their club either as committee members, captains or professionals.

The format was a three-quarter handicap Stapleford with all 12 team members scores counting and gold, silver or bronze shields were on offer to those who took part.

Colley paid tribute to the organising team, particularly John McCrae and Martin Bedwell from Bewdley Pines, Frank Holder from Little Lakes and Paul Tracey and Simon Tea from Wharton Park.

He added: "It went very well and everyone had a great time. The result was good for us but normally the home team should win because it's their course.

"I've already had a few phone calls from other clubs who would like to get involved. And I would like to expand the competition over two days, instead of one."
