THE Campaign for Real Ale has joined the fight to save an award- winning Wythall pub in the face of plans to turn it into a themed bar.

Regulars in Forhill, near Wythall, are worried at the prospect of losing the traditional surroundings of The Peacock.

Owners Scottish and Newcastle Retail plan to turn it into a Chef and Brewer theme pub.

Now Peacock regular Peter Higgins, who has used the pub for more than 20 years, has started a petition to save it.

"You'll find the majority of current patrons will vote with their feet on this project," said Mr Higgins.

Chairman of Redditch and Bromsgrove CAMRA branch Brett Laniosh said: "There's no reason why the distinct public bar can't be retained.

"It's a great feature and gives The Peacock character but it's also a place where friends can enjoy a pint without feeling guilty about not eating.

"It won the CAMRA Branch pub of the year award in 1998 and we strongly recommend SNR don't fix what isn't broken."
