DEAR EDITOR - I read with dismay the headline 'Hostel funding must be pulled'.

Why is the Single Homeless Project suddenly controversial?

I worked at the project for three years, spending my last 12 months there as manager.

I was always proud to be associated with the place. Many of our young residents had serious issues that needed to be dealt with but we always offered support. If, however, any of the young people were a threat to themselves or anyone they were always asked to leave.

What has happened to the rules that said -- no drugs, no alcohol and no intimidating or anti-social behaviour?

I never found it difficult to enforce the rules, so what has happened?

Recently I spoke on BBC Radio Hereford and Worcester about the Homeless Project, pointing out that it is a much needed facility in Droitwich. Donna Baddeley was on the same programme and afterwards she asked if she could pass my name and address to Step Out, as they were thinking of setting up a local committee and I agreed without hesitation. In fact I rang Step Out Drop In and offered to do voluntary support work with the young people.

I was thanked for my support and told that they would 'get back to me'. They didn't. I am not the only person who has offered support to Step Out in order to keep the project open and yet they do not seem interested.

Droitwich Spa Housing Association own the properties and I would ask them to please take a more active role in ensuring the Homeless Project is run properly.

If Step Out is unable to carry out its role then maybe Spa Housing would like to contact me as I know a group of people who would work tirelessly to make the project something for Droitwich to be proud of.
