INCONSISTENT is a fair description of our start to the season but when things are not going well you can learn a lot about your players and their character by the way they react.

One player who has managed a level of consistency is the Worcester City captain, Carl Heeley, who in fact has been playing very steadily now for the past 18 months.

He wants to do well and has done well and I think a lot of that is down to his level of fitness.

After suffering an horrific injury when he fractured his cheek bone he must have had some doubts about returning to the game.

He's playing in a position at centre-half where he has to go up for headers, and arms and elbows are flying around but he's bounced back and is delivering the goods.

I can't speak for his performances prior to my arrival at St George's Lane but people at the club say he is in the best form of his life.

As a captain he is slowly getting to grips with the role although as a team we are short of born leaders.

But like Simon Redfern who was my captain at Burton Albion, Carl leads by example -- a bit like David Beckham for England -- someone who is an inspirational figure.

I think players like to see new faces in the dressing room and especially good ones and the players we've brought in have strengthened the squad.

Jon Holloway is one of those signings and despite carrying an injury, the former Bath City player has been tremendous for us.

In goal Paul Wyatt has stepped in since the Kettering game and hasn't let us down.

He's still learning his trade and it will be another 10 years before he is considered as experienced, but he is working well with goalkeeping coach John Newman. Whenever Danny McDonnell is out I have no concerns about Paul.

There are parts of his game that need improving -- but that applies to everyone whether they are in the Dr Martens Premier League or the Barclaycard Premiership -- but we are very fortunate to have two such good goalkeepers.

Last Saturday's visitors, Havant & Waterlooville, have been the most impressive side I've seen so far and even though they didn't score against us they looked like they had a lot of goals in them.

They were also solid defensively, dangerous at set pieces and had players with ability all over the park and had a mixture of youth and experience.

I don't think they are going to be far away from the title at the end of the season.

We travel to Folkestone on Saturday and although we did the double over them last season, that doesn't mean anything as the league position this time round shows.

But we are not kidding ourselves and we need to be picking up points at places like Folkestone if we want to be up there when the division starts to settle down after 11 or 12 games.

I think we've made a better start than I imagined we would at St George's Lane and now we need to build on it and try and achieve more consistency.
