VOLUNTEERS from Bromsgrove and Droitwich Spa are needed to join the Samaritans which has seen a sharp decline in its numbers despite an increase in calls.

The Worcester branch, which covers both towns, currently has 95 volunteers but needs another 15.

Last year, calls to the branch went up by 13 per cent.

The Samaritans offers a unique 24-hour, 365-days-a-year service for people who do not know where else to turn.

People can also pop into the centre in Sansome Place between 9am and 10pm every day.

Incredibly rewarding

Branch director Eric Rowland said: "Without our volunteers we couldn't be here for the people from Bromsgrove and Droitwich and the rest of the county who contacted us last year.

"Being a Samaritan volunteer can be incredibly rewarding, as well as hard work.

"No-one is expected to take calls without full training and excellent on-going support."

The branch covers the whole of Worcestershire and last year had over 15,000 contacts.

Mr Rowland added: "More than one in four people personally knows someone who has died by suicide and lots more know someone who is feeling desperate and alone."
