New Olympic (1) 2

Victoria Barnt Green (4) 4

Gordon Bridgewater Cup round one

HOW this depleted Vic line-up won will surely remain a mystery for years to come.

Outplayed for much of the match, they punished slack New Olympic defending with four clinical finishes in the opening half an hour.

Adam Davis bagged the first with a deflected effort and Marcus Pierpoint rattled in a hat-trick to all but finish the match at half time.

But Vic substitute Chris Vaughan had other ideas. He handed Stourbridge-based Olympic a lifeline, promptly giving away a penalty with a reckless challenge more commonplace in a nightclub brawl.

Stuart Hensman sent keeper Robbie James the wrong way from the spot kick. Had it not been for some outstanding saves from James, however, the result may have been very different.

Division One rivals Olympic piled on the pressure in the second half but an odd decision to leave their shooting boots at home proved costly. Vic had a couple of chances to bury the match but Vaughan suffered a nosebleed with the goal at his mercy.

With time running out, Green's makeshift central defender James Moir rewarded Olympic with a consolation for their efforts by sending a sweet, looping back-header over team mate James.
