THE Spa's MP was in town on Saturday encouraging residents to devote more time to community work.

The Opportunities Fair, organised by Droitwich Spa Volunteer Bureau, was opened by Tory MP Peter Luff.

Representatives from groups were on hand to answer questions about working in the community and visitors could have their say on crime and disorder at Wychavon District Council's stall.

Mr Luff told residents: "Worcestershire doesn't just say, 'I pay my taxes - that's my contribution to society,' as this fair demonstrates.

"But Droitwich has changed hugely in the 25 years I have known it and many newcomers to the town may not be aware of all they can do to build a better community.

"The organisations are here because they need help and I hope they will get it."

Bureau manager Mervyn Brookes said the event at the Council Chambers, St Richard's House, in Victoria Square, was a resounding success, with around 40 people agreeing to consider volunteering.

Mr Brookes added: "It's very important to make everyone aware of what we can offer."

* The bureau was the first town group to sign up for Make a Difference Day on October 27.

The event, organised by Community Service Volunteers (CSV), is the UK's biggest single day of volunteering action.

Thousands of people are expected to roll up their sleeves and tackle a range of activities.

The Spa's volunteer bureau will host an awareness day at the Old Library Centre, in Ombersley Street East, to encourage residents to take an active role in community life.
