A 'GREEN necklace' lined with trees around Droitwich is the environmental vision of the town's Civic Society.

Consultation papers put to Wychavon District Council outline plans to establish a series of woodlands and country parks in and around the boundary of the town of Droitwich.

If a success, the aim is to develop country parks, extra trees, and a circular walkway around the periphery of the town - a 'necklace' to link up an entire green network.

"Every district council is currently implementing local development plans, to consider ideas such as new housing and commercial development," said Stuart Haywood, vice-chairman of Droitwich Spa Civic Society.

"At the same time we want them to review this scheme, which would improve the environment and the leisure facilities for this town."

The green-fingered proposals suggest establishing two country parks to the north and south of the town and the creation of small woodlands.

Designing the circular walk will provide information boards, picnic areas and cycle ways for the public.

The Civic Society is consulting local interest on its proposals this autumn, the forum providing a basis of discussion and alternative suggestions on any person or group interested in the plans.

Forest Enterprises, the Wildlife Trust, landowners, farmers, and walkers are some of the groups already consulted.

Wychavon District Council's initial response to the plans has been very positive.

"We welcome the work being done by the Civic Society," said the council's head of planning Jack Hegarty.

"It will be thoroughly considered as part of the local plan review which is currently underway."
