THE funeral of the Malvern teenager killed after the stolen car he was driving smashed into a lorry near Evesham is expected to take place tomorrow.

John Smith was pronounced dead at the scene after the white Ford Escort, which had been reported stolen from Malvern, ploughed into a grain lorry on Saturday, September 1.

The 14-year-old was being followed by police when he crashed on the A44 Worcester to Evesham Road in Hampton just after 8am.

A passenger in the car was airlifted to Birmingham's Selly Oak Hospital and transferred to the Diana, Princess of Wales Children's Hospital after being cut from the wreckage, but later released with minor injuries.

An internal police investigation was launched after the incident, which Mid-Worcestershire MP Peter Luff said should be a warning to other car thieves.

Smith, of Clare Road, was due to appear at Droitwich Magistrates Court charged with robbery, attempted robbery, two accounts of burglary and one count of aggravated burglary.

The schoolboy's funeral is due to be held at 10.30am at Christchurch, Malvern, after which he will be buried at Great Malvern Cemetery.
