TOWN skate enthusiasts are a step closer to having a specialist venue where they can perfect gravity defying skills.

A skate park could open in King George Playing Fields following a cash injection from Wychavon District Council.

The authority's community partnership committee approved a £10,000 investment scheme to provide facilities for in-line skaters, skateboarders and BMX cyclists.

The council wants Wychavon Community Leisure Association Ltd, which runs Droitwich Sports and Leisure Centre, to manage the project.

Skaters would be supervised and charged an entrance fee.

Cllr Pam Davey (Con, Droit.Central) said last Tuesday's decision was only the first step.

"We are now angling for a further £60-£70,000 from outside groups to ensure we can provide a first class facility," she added.

Cllr Eileen Hope (Con, Droit.South) told the Advertiser: "Consultation must take place with users and residents to ensure the proposed site is acceptable.

"We must not make the same mistakes again."

Skate ramps were situated in the Lido Park in 1998 but removed by Droitwich Spa Town Council in 1999 following complaints from householders about noise.

The equipment is now at Droitwich Spa Adventure Playground, also in King George Playing Fields, where £14,000 has been raised for renovation and installation.

Playground manager Dave Spicer said: "The new scheme would be very different to our project.

"We will offer a free service for all ages and abilities while I think Wychavon's venue would attract more proficient skaters."

Cllr Roy Seabourne (Lab, Droit.West) welcomed the project and said: "I think the site is ideal."
