CAMPAIGNERS are planning a party in the park to drum up support for their bid to save the town's historic Lido Pool.

Droitwich: Save Our Lido Today (SALT) group wants to set up a charitable trust to run the site.

The salty attraction was closed by Wychavon Dist-rict Council this year.

Community leaders claim it's unwise to spend £100,000 on repairs while negotiations with a private company continue.

The pool will be discussed at a special meeting of Wychavon's community partnership committee on Tuesday.

SALT spokesman David Parkinson said: "We've yet to discuss the final arr-angements but we want to organise an event in the park before the meeting."

He added: "I would like to see residents gather in the park, jump onto coaches and travel to Pershore to show councillors the strength of public feeling."

Protesters turned out at Droitwich Spa Town Council's Monday meeting with a list of questions about the pool.

The authority's policy is to only give written responses.

But town council leader Pam Davey (Con, Droit.South) said: "Your frustration is shared. Council officers are working their socks off in preparation for the meeting on Tuesday."

Cllr Davey said Wychavon will consider a business plan from SALT and residents are due to meet a council officer today to discuss ideas.

SALT was planning to meet at the Rifleman's Arms, in Station Street, last night to talk tactics.

Mr Parkinson, of Burrish Street, said: "A trust scheme has proved a success in Cheltenham with the council's support.

"We are committed to protecting the pool and park's heritage and providing affordable access to swimming. We have grave concerns about a privatisation scheme."
