AFTER being inspired by a local resident's complaint regarding litter and dog faeces, I asked the council if it would be possible to get a dog dirt bin sited at the top end of Weir Lane where the main cycle route and riverside walk leads to Worcester City centre.
This footpath has been the cause for complaints for several years, for one reason or another. Although the council told me that there is no money in the budget for extra bins to be serviced i.e. being emptied on a twice-weekly basis, the placement of the bin was not a problem to the budget itself.
After a very brief period of consultation, I offered to empty the bin twice a week myself. As we have our refuse collected by the trade waste section, this would not put the refuse men at any risk of being contaminated.
I am very pleased to report that the majority of dog owners are cleaning up after their dogs and using the bin.
Having said that, there is still a small amount of people who do not pick up and remove their dog's faeces for one reason or another.
It is these people I wish to warn through your columns. I have asked the dog warden to make random and frequent visits to the site, and hopefully educate the owners to comply - or they could possibly face a £1,000 fine.
So please make the effort for all of our sakes and make this path the pleasant walk or cycle ride that it deserves to be.
