THERE have been reports in the Press that pass marks have been cut to boost GCSE grades.

While it is probably true that the 'O' level was harder than the present exam, I do feel that the present controversy tends to take the shine off the undoubted achievements of our young people.

Apart from that, it should be borne in mind that they are on the threshold of a difficult, demanding world in which competition for jobs has never been higher.

Undercut by the Government's foreign recruitment policies, and the withdrawal of all help from the State as far as financial support for their higher education is concerned, the student's task has never been harder.

So my advice to these youngsters is simply this.

Ignore the retrospective wisdom of the so-called experts, all you in the Class of '001. You are a credit to yourselves and to this nation.

I wish them all the very best of luck for the future. They'll certainly need it.

JOHN COSFORD,

Pershore.
