WORCESTERSHIRE County Council's education services have seen a good response from students and parents to the government's grant scheme.

The pilot, education maintenance allowance scheme, which was introduced in Worcestershire last September is about to enter its second year and more students will be able to benefit.

Students living in the county and undertaking a full time course in further education are eligible to apply for a grant which pays up to £20 a week during term time and assists with transport costs. They must also have finished year 11 in May 2000 or May 2001.

The scheme's co-ordinator Alan Davies said: "The scheme continues to be popular with students and parents, but we feel that there are more students who could benefit.

"Although eligibility is also subject to confirmation that the family income is less than £30,000 parents should be assured that any existing benefits being received will not be affected by this allowance."

Parents are encouraged to contact the council's hotline on 0845 6011 967 for an application pack.
