A WHEELCHAIR-bound Kidderminster woman is hoping to raise much-needed funds for a town day centre while taking on the challenge of a lifetime.

Hayley Andrews, who suffers from an immune system disorder, is setting off tomorrow for an activity holiday, during which she will take part in paragliding, horse-riding, canoeing, dog-sledding and white water rafting, in the Pyrenees at Lourdes. Hayley Andrews raising funds for Sandalwood Resource Centre.

And the 30-year-old, who has suffered with the condition - which requires regular treatment - for about five years, is hoping to attract sponsorship to raise money for Sandalwood Resource Centre on Comberton Road, where she spends one day a week.

The centre, described by Miss Andrews as her "safe haven", offers support and advice to people with a range of disabilities as well as activities including arts, crafts and internet access.

She will also be taking part in cycling using adapted bikes, mountaineering, orienteering and kite flying as part of the week-long holiday, starting tomorrow.

She said: "I really feel the activities I will be doing warrant some form of help either through sponsorship or donations. With or without help I will do what I can. Even if I fail I will have tried."

And Miss Andrews, who lives at the Woodlands Assessment Unit in Rifle Range Road, said she was keen to "kill two birds with one stone" and raise money for Sandalwood while taking up the "chance of a lifetime".

"Money doesn't grow on trees," she added.

Sandalwood manager Lyn Archer said: "It's brilliant that Hayley is going to be doing all these really adventurous things and raising money for us at the same time."

Anyone who wants to sponsor Hayley's efforts should call Sandalwood on 01562 820891.
