A HISTORIC forge which is thought to date back to 1238 is opening its doors to the public this weekend for the last time this year.

Churchill Forge was used for making spades and shovels after being changed from a corn mill in the 15th century. Pauline Hayward at Churchill Forge, which opens this weekend.

Visitors to the Churchill village forge on Sunday will get the chance to see tools made there as well as old photographs and trade documents. Two working water wheels and a large mill pool can also be seen.

Pauline Hayward, who lives on site and co-founded Churchill Forge Trust to fund the renovation of the scheduled ancient monument, said limited edition china mugs would also be on sale.

She added the open days are important as they boost group bookings for visits through the rest of the year. The forge will be open between 2pm and 5pm and Mrs Hayward can be contacted for details on 01562 700476.
