WORCESTERSHIRE Cricket Board's hopes of Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy glory are over after a 39-run defeat in the first round of next year's competition against Buckinghamshire at Dinton yesterday.
Bucks made 224-7 in their allotted 50 overs, led by Paul Sawyer (43) and Bobby Sher (40).
Jonathan Wright was the county side's best bowler with 2-19 in 10 overs, supported by David Banks (2-46).
Worcestershire, despite a defiant 48 from David Manning, 29 from Wright and 26 from Abdul Hafeez, fell short at 185 all out.
Jeremy Batty was Buckinghamshire's most successful bowler, taking 3-51, while man of the match Sher returned figures of 2-33.
Herefordshire, who shocked Middlesex in this year's competition, will play Suffolk at Bury St Edmunds in the second round on September 13.
Suffolk beat Denmark by seven wickets in yesterday's match at Copdock.
