ORGANISERS of Stourport Horticultural Society's annual show have hailed it a major success, despite a sabotage bid by vandals less than 48 hours before the event.
A marquee at Riverside Meadows collapsed after ropes were loosened on Thursday evening, forcing the society chairman Gary Phillips, president Michael Ecob and member Roger Hughes to sleep in the tent on Friday to guard against further attacks.
Mr Ecob said sunshine had helped attract 1,000 visitors to the two-day show.
But he said there was sadness at news that renowned flower arranging demonstrator Josie Martin had lost a long-running battle with cancer on Saturday morning. He paid tribute to her support for flower arranging clubs in the area and for the Stourport society.
Seven-year-old Kerianne Martin won the children's rosette for her miniature garden. Countryside Nurseries, Worcester Road, won a silver medal for its floral display outside the marquee.
Rob Thomas won gold for his bonsai display and Dean's Fuschia took bronze. The medals were presented by Shropshire Fuschia Society.
The oldest life member, Frank Young, 89, retired from competitive showing.
