A WOMAN who accidentally set fire to herself while lighting a bonfire has been discharged from hospital.

Gail McNeill was let out of Selly Oak Hospital, in Birmingham, yesterday after receiving treatment at the burns unit since the incident at her home on Saturday.

Firefighters said the 34-year-old, of Structons Heath, Great Witley, had been trying to light a bonfire with petrol at around 2.30pm when fumes from the can ignited and set fire to her clothes.

She was airlifted to hospital and was said to be in "considerable pain".

The incident has sparked a warning from the fire service, who are concerned about people lighting bonfires during the summer months.

"Never put flammable liquid on to a bonfire or barbecue to get them going as vapours from them are invisible and can spread for some distance, igniting and engulfing a person in flames," said Adrian Moore, community fire safety officer for Hereford and Worcester Fire Service.
