A WORCESTER woman was behind bars in Barbados today after being caught trying to smuggle £160,000 worth of liquid cocaine into Britain.

Suzanne Georgina O'Donald faces up to five years in jail after authorities at Barbados airport found the eight wine bottles filled with the drug in her luggage.

The 32-year-old had travelled from the nearby paradise island of St Vincent and was on a flight back to London when she was caught on Tuesday.

She and her accomplice Sally-Ann Martin, aged 31, who comes from Birmingham, were both sentenced to two years.

But chief magistrate Glyde Nicholl told the pair they face another three years in prison if they each fail to pay fines of $250,000 in Barbadian dollars - which is equivalent to £80,000.

The pair were jailed after admitting charges of possession, trafficking, intent to supply and intent to import eight litres of liquid cocaine at a Barbados magistrates court.

A Foreign Office spokesman today confirmed the two women had been caught at Barbados airport and jailed for two years.

A West Mercia police spokeswoman said CID officers were not aware of the case and did not think the force was involved.

Prisoners Abroad, a charity which supports Britons in foreign prisons, said O'Donald had not been in touch, but she faced an unpleasant stretch in the jail.

"Prisons in the West Indies are very harsh and we've had many bad reports," a spokeswoman said.

"We've heard several stories about cells infested with cockroaches and rats, and often the food isn't adequate to maintain a healthy diet.

"If we do hear that either of the women are in distress, we can send food parcels and medicines to keep them healthy and comfortable if they have no family."
