IF you think of folk music as just the songs played with fiddles in Irish pubs, then you could be in for a surprise.

Because there's a new sound to folk music and it's coming to The Faithful City at the beginning of next month.

Scandinavian folk music.

All of you looking for something a bit different are being offered the chance to try this relatively unknown style of music, which will is being performed at the Huntington Hall on Monday, September 10.

But for all those hard line folk fans there is a happy ending.

The show - being performed by acclaimed singer Karen Tweed, famous for her work with the Poozies, SWAP and Two Duos Quartet - is actually a one-off project mixing traditional English and Celtic sounds with Scandinavian.

"It's quite unusual music," said the 38-year-old singer.

"I'm very interested in folk music, especially Scandinavian which is such a different sound to the traditional Scottish and Irish sound.

"The music we will be playing is more lively and more serene."

But it isn't just the music which will ensure audiences get a superb performance, the singer has enlisted the help of some top musicians.

After meeting at a recent folk festival in Denmark, the musicians embarked on the project to fuse the different styles and compose new material.

"I've some brilliant musicians backing me," said the singer.

"I love good music played really well and have high standards, but I wondered if I was up to performing alongside them.

"It really is music which has been put into the hands of exquisite musicians."
