I was interested in Alison Hawes' letter re the disappearance of her cat (Postbag, August 17t).

Over the past two years at least two of our free-range bantams have vanished from the garden without trace, apart from the presence of buzzards circling overhead. These are distinct from those free-range bantams we know have carried off by foxes, of course - special thanks to our neighbour for actually freeing one of them from the fox's jaws the other day!

We have deliberately set out to create a wildlife garden and find it fascinating to see how far up the food chain we can go. We are happy to host herons, sparrow-hawks and buzzards, but do feel a little anxious about Big Cats. However, once you start to attract wildlife you cannot control where to stop.
