THE City of Worcester Ladies Open Bowls Tournament ended yesterday with the four finals at Cripplegate Park.

In the Hilda Keay Triples final, Audrey Cox, Pam Eaves and Pat Aston of Kings Heath, Birmingham, won 17-14 against the formidable trio of Pat Logan (Gilt Edge), Irene Wainwright (Chester Road) and Jean Coates (Budleigh Salterton).

The Birmingham trio were off to a flying start and were 12-2 shots ahead at the eighth end. Then their opponents started to make a comeback and on the 15th end had reduced the arrears to 17-9. But despite scoring five shots on the last three ends, Coates and her team failed to make up the deficit.

The Vera Hedges Pairs went to Worcester Bowling Club's Edna Carter and Jean Taylor after they defeated Jean Arnold and Joan Butler (Worcester Ladies/ Cripplegate Ladies) 24-12.

Carter and Taylor were in command from the start and, although the opposition tried very hard to make inroads, they were 24-6 down by the 17th end. But even by scoring on the last four ends, they were unable to do more than double their score.

The Margaret Wharton Singles was won by Irene Wainwright (Chester Road), who defeated Sybil Hall (Malvern Victoria) 22-12.

Although Hall was first on the scoreboard she was unable to gain the lead after the third end, enabling her opponent to gradually build up a winning score of 22-12 after 22 ends.

The Two-Wood Singles, for players eliminated in the early rounds, was a new competition introduced this year and has proved worthy of inclusion in the main programme.

The final went to Gill Cliff (Hewell), who defeated Joan Broderick (Cripplegate Ladies) 15-8.

The annual event, being held for the 16th time this year, once again was a great success.

The ladies provided many hours of entertainment and some excellent bowling was enjoyed by many visitors and spectators.
