MALVERN Anglers fished for the Fitzwater Cup recently at a new venue on the River Avon at Birlingham, a very picturesque stretch of river at the foot of Bredon Hill.

As the match progressed most members were getting plenty of bites and had some sport with the large head of small fish present but Dave Harris had drawn on the bream and by casting an open end feeder filled with groundbait to the far bank trees Dave landed one good bream of 3-7-0 and a couple of skimmers early on.

He continued to catch skimmers at regular intervals during the match and finished with a net of 11-12-0 which was good enough for first place and the cup.

In second place was Dave Yapp who adopted a long pole approach to take three good skimmers and several small roach and perch in 16 feet of water for his bag of 7-12-0.

Making a welcome return to the match circuit in third place was Dave Twigg who also fished pole tactics. Dave caught small fish throughout and ended with a creditable 7-6-0.

Thanks must go to Richard Webster for organising the venue for this match which was thoroughly enjoyed by all members attending.

The latest round of the Saturday Scramble series was fished on the club pool last weekend. Dave Twigg followed up his third place in the Fitzwater Cup by taking first place, Dave fished pole and corn over groundbait from peg 20 despite losing several fish, a change to a stronger elastic saw him land 29-10-0 of carp.

Club treasurer John Shaw fished a straight lead rig on peg 23 and netted 27-11-0 of carp using bread on the hook, for second place, just edging out Mike Spragg who fished a groundbait feeder to the island to net 27-6-0 of carp from peg 4.
