A MALVERN woman who fraudulently claimed more than £2,300 in housing and council tax relief benefits has been sentenced to 40 hours' community service.

Droitwich magistrates, sitting last Friday, also ordered Julie Lane, of Seymour Court, Marlborough Gardens, to pay £100 costs to Malvern Hills District Council, whose benefit fraud department brought the case, and to repay the money at £200 a month.

Lane, aged 24, of Seymour Court, Marlborough Gardens, Malvern, failed to tell the authorities when she got married on October 2, 1999.

She continued to falsely claim housing benefit until the end of June the following year, and also accepted council tax relief.

Magistrates said they had taken into account Mrs Lane's lack of previous convictions and the fact that she and her husband both work full-time.

She had pleaded guilty to the charge in July.
