BOLIVIANS picking up their country's only English language newspaper will soon be reading the work of a Bishop's Frome graduate.

Katie Harrison, who was born, brought up and educated in Worcestershire and Herefordshire, recently graduated from Bristol UWE with honours in Fine Art.

But, keen to embark upon a career in photojournalism, she has accepted a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to write copy for one of the South American country's weekly newspapers.

"I have been offered a prestigious placement with Bolivia's only English language newspaper which is well regarded throughout South America," said the 22 year-old.

"I will be producing the majority of photographic images and writing articles for the weekly from September until December," she said.

Katie, who will be on a voluntary journalism internship, leaves for Bolivia on August 29 but still needs to raise in the region of £800 to cover the placement costs and materials.

She has already raised £1,400 to cover her flight, insurance and injections.

Bolivia is nine times the size of England and encompasses dramatic mountain ranges, tropical jungles and salt plains, as well as a volcanic cratoral capital city, the highest in the world.

It is the poorest country in South America but with over 50 per cent of the population maintaining traditional values and beliefs, and controversial issues ranging from cocaine production to shanty town effluent disposal, Katie is sure it will prove to be one of the richest countries in terms of journalism.
