SIX-TIMES Evesham singles champion Darren Selvey has made the successful transition from club tables to the international green baize.

The 29-year-old pool ace achieved a lifelong ambition earlier this year when he earned a long awaited call-up to the Wales senior A squad.

His first experience at the highest level saw the Badsey potter compete in the European Championships in France and more recently in the Anglo-Welsh Cup when he helped his country overcome world champions England 12-9.

Selvey, a nursery manager at RA Meredith in Offenham, first picked up a cue at local league level as a 12-year-old and soon became the youngest winner of the town's singles title.

Five more wins in the annual event followed, success that caught the eye of the county selectors and he made his Worcestershire debut as a 15-year-old.

He changed his allegiances to Warwickshire, whom he represented for several years and now he displays his potting skills for one of the top counties, Gloucestershire.

Badsey's eight-ball exponent has his sights set on further success and, like his international colleagues, Selvey's ultimate dream is to become world champion.

The next 12 months could have a big say in his ambitious pursuit of world domination. Selvey will come up against old enemy England at next month's Home Internationals in Blackpool before he joins the Welsh squad on a tour of South Africa.

The winter months will then be taken up at his home Ambassador Club with the small matter of preparing for next February's European Championships in Malta before a return to the seaside and the Fylde Coast for the World Championships in May when Selvey will be hoping to tower over his opponents!
