Jennifer Shipton from Stroud was the July demonstrator, with the title Floral Cornucopia.

A green and white design in a wicker basket depicted a monastery garden, a vertical design of white roses portrayed the new millennium, and a mixture of delphiniums and red roses illustrated the goddess Flora scattering her seeds.

Jennifer told how the Elizabethans warded off evil smells by carrying a posy of herbs called a "tussy mussy", while the Victorians carried posies depicting the language of flowers.

The art nouveau period was depicted with hazel and rhus cotinus, and the finale of the demonstration was a church pedestal with lilies from the Far East.

A barbecue in aid of Kemp House was arranged at Newbarns Cottages on August 11.

Entries for Stourport Horticultural Show must be submitted by Monday.

The next meeting will be on Monday, September 24 at the Social Day Centre, New Street.
