STAFF at Bewdley Station are hoping to complete its authentic 1920s look by installing replica oil lamps - and can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The £6,400 project involves replacing 20 electric platform lamps and is the last stage of the station's facelift aimed at restoring the 1920s Great Western Railway look. Work should be finished by the end of the year. Bewdley Station foreman Simon Turner with one of the new 1920s-style platform lamps being installed.

So far two "Windsor" type lamps, which cost £320 each and are electrically powered but designed to ensure the bulb is concealed, have been installed.

Station foreman Simon Turner, 17, and 24-year-old assistant station manager Nick Farress are leading the five-man lamp-fitting team which has raised £1,500 towards the cause.

Volunteers are also designing a website to publicise the project as well as sending out leaflets, posters, and selling Bewdley Station ties with the GWR motif.

The project will complete the revamp of the station which has seen the footbridge rebuilt, the roof, fences and benches repaired and new paintwork.

Mr Turner said: "Bewdley is in its best condition for years. The lamps are the perfect finishing touch.

"Most people will be pushed to tell they're not oil lamps. If we're able to keep raising funds at the present rate, we should be able to replace all 20 lamps by the end of the year."
