A LONG-SERVING firefighter has left his hotseat of tackling blazes and union work to enjoy retirement and prepare for a tour of Europe.

Leading firefighter Reg Moule, of Kidderminster Fire Station, has stepped down after 26 years in the service, 11 of which he has spent as his colleagues' representative on the Hereford and Worcester Fire Brigade Union. Fifty-three-year-old Mr Moule, who lives in Bewdley, said: "I have had a fantastic time, there really isn't a better job in the world.

"I cannot think of many people who leap out of bed relishing their day at the office!"

He now plans to spend several months touring Europe before taking what he describes as his 'gap' rest year.

Mr Moule described his biggest achievement in the union as successfully fighting to keep Bewdley Fire Station open after brigade cutbacks.

He said: "I have had a wonderful career here and the brigade is in a great state.

"Working conditions are excellent and relationships between folk at work are superb, particularly at Kidderminster. I wish everybody connected with the service the best for the future."

He added: "Myself and wife Margaret have bought a motorhome and we are going to travel Europe, going to France, Spain and North Africa later this year with our motorbike.

"Then I'll take a gap year before deciding what I would like to do with my time. It would be nice to do something which helps others."
