HOUSEHOLDERS in Wyre Forest are to get new help to cut their heating and lighting bills following a £130,000 cash boost to the district council.

The money, which has been jointly awarded by the Energy Saving Trust to Wyre Forest and Malvern Hills district councils, will kickstart a three-year energy-saving scheme.

REACH, or Raising Energy Awareness in Communities and Homes, will provide discounts on energy-saving measures including loft and cavity insulation and draught proofing and grants, particularly for low-income households, to alleviate fuel poverty.

The scheme, which gets under way in the autumn, will also offer interest-free loans for measures such as high-efficiency boilers as well as free advice and information.

It is one of only 40 local authority projects to receive Home Energy Conservation funding this year

Zena Wright, senior environmental health officer at Wyre Forest District Council, said residents would be encouraged to take part in a programme of community activity and form teams of "Energy Champions".
