GOVERNMENT inspectors have told Wyre Forest District Council's computer department to improve as part of a major audit.

The information technology service, which employs 13 people and has a £680,000 budget, was rated only as fair by inspectors.

The survey was carried out under the Government's best value scheme aimed at encouraging councils to deliver the most efficient and economic service.

The inspection revealed concerns about the department's lack of effective performance targets and the absence of a clear IT strategy and robust management system.

It highlighted areas of success, such as high levels of customer satisfaction and the attitude of staff.

However, the council has been told to develop a major improvement plan which would include meeting set targets and assessing the cost and quality of the service to other council workers.

Members of the council's overview and scrutiny committee for strategy, best value and performance noted the recommendations.
