ASPIRING Hereford golfer Gregg Morgan's success on the course is good news for his ambition to become a professional but bad news for his family's furniture as cabinets wilt under the weight of trophies the youngster has won.

The 16-year-old has enjoyed sparkling fortunes on the greens and fairways including winning Herefordshire and Shropshire's match play, U16 and U18 titles in the same season as well as captaining the junior section.

As club champion at Belmont Lodge and Golf Club he has qualified for today's two-day final of the Golf World-Champion of Champions tournament to be held at Woodhall Spa, home of the English Golf Union, in Lincolnshire.

Greg shot a 76 at Celtic Manor - the course shortlisted to host the Ryder Cup - in the Wales & West Country Regional final.

An unfortunate plugged ball on the front nine left him at three over but he pared the back nine.

"Celtic Manor is a good test of golf and Gregg did well and was unlucky with a plugged ball," said his dad, Steve.

Gregg will be pitting his abilities to become Britain's Best Club Golfer alongside 49 other golf club champions who have qualified from the 10 area finals held nationwide.

The Guest of Honour at the final will be victorious Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup Captain Peter McEvoy, fresh back from the United States where his British team retained the Walker Cup for the first time on American soil.

Dad, Steve, has seen his son flourish at the sport which he took up at around nine years of age.

"He used to come round with me when he was nine or 10 and has just a natural gift," said Steve.

"He obviously wants to be a pro and will probably try to get a scholarship in America after his A levels but we are taking it step by step.

"Hopefully he is going to the School of Excellence and is in the England squad for training.

"He lives for golf and that is all he wants to do and there probably isn't a week goes by when he isn't a competition of one sort or another."

Gregg, who has a handicap of 0.6 is coached by Phil Brookes at The Grove in Leominster, was a pupil at Kingston High School in Hereford.

He is also a member of Ross Golf Club where he won the Scratch Cup.
