FEARS taxpayers will foot the bill for the appeal against the decision to refuse the Kidderminster incinerator are coming true, according to a Stourport county councillor.

John Gordon raised the doubts after receiving what he described as an "unsatisfactory" response to his inquiries about whether Worcestershire County Council was allowed to fund an appeal after its own councillors refused planning permission for the burner.

Health Concern group leader and Mitton member John Gordon said the council's reply through independent solicitors Eversheds, of Birmingham, did not answer his queries.

Mr Gordon, who is also a Stourport district councillor, had written to county environmental services director Richard Wigginton and head of infrastructure Jeff Romanis to discover whether the appeal lodged by Severn Waste Services would be funded by the council, whose planning councillors refused permission for the £40 million burner off Stourport Road in April.

He said: "I got a rambling answer about how the contract the council has with SWS is part of the county's overall waste strategy and that an appeal is linked to this.

"This is totally unsatisfactory and I have written back demanding a proper explanation so people know where we are going from here."
