MALVERN'S Three Counties Showground was a frenzy of activity today as last-minute preparations were made for the three-day Summer Show.

The event, which opens tomorrow, replaces the traditional Three Counties Show, held annually in June. This year's extravanganza was cancelled because of the foot-and-mouth crisis.

"The entertainment programme for the Summer Show has been arranged very much with families in mind," said Chris Milne, chief executive of the Three Counties Agricultural Society.

"Although the event can't focus on agricultural, there will still be a strong countryside element to retain the heart of the traditional 'Three Counties' as people know and love it."

Among a galaxy of attractions are international class showjumping, a spectacular motorcycle display team, bungee jumping, large car and motorbike shows, an assault course, 4x4 driving and laser clay shooting.

There will also be more than 500 tradestands and each day will close with a two-hour pop concert in the main arena, featuring tribute acts to Abba, Tom Jones, Tina Turner and Freddie Mercury.

Tomorrow, the Earl and Countess of Wessex are due to visit the show and spend several hours touring the site, during which they will drop in to the Church Marquee, which is the base for the TCAS Stress in the Countryside Appeal, an initiative supported by the Evening News.

Daily admission to the Three Counties Summer Show - which ends on Sunday - is £9 for adults and £2 for children.
