AN exciting deal could soon be struck to rejuvenate a large town centre store which has stood empty since March.

Retail giant Wilkinson is considering branching out into Droitwich Spa.

Company bosses are seeking permission from Wychavon District Council to create a new shop front at the former Gateway site, in Salter's Shopping Centre.

Wilkinson sells household and garden equipment at low prices.

A company spokesman confirmed negotiations over a site were ongoing and added: "We would welcome the opportunity of opening in Droitwich."

A new store could create around 90 jobs.

Nearly 30 jobs were axed in March when Gateway closed.

The store, owned by Somerfield, which also runs Kwik Save, closed because bosses decided it was not feasible to run two supermarkets in the town.

Droitwich Spa town councillor John Cook (Lab, Droitwich West) is delighted Wilkinson wants to develop in the town centre.

He said: "Many people hoped for another supermarket, such as Iceland or Aldi, but I think this is the second best option.

"This popular store would attract shoppers from neighbouring towns."

Salter's trader Brenda Morris runs Beaubelles.

She said: "If Wilkinson attracts lots of shoppers into town then I welcome the news, but if it fails to pull in the crowds, its low prices could affect shopkeepers."

Salter's managing agents, Debenham Tie Lung, have confirmed ongoing negotiations with Wilkinson.

Association director Gert Corfield said: "I believe Wilkinson could have a positive effect on town trade."
