YOUNG brothers Joseph and George Banner were hailed as heroes this week following their prompt action which may have saved the life of their desperately sick grandmother.

The youngsters knew just what to do when Jean Daniels suddenly collapsed in the living room of her bungalow in Walls Road, Stoke Prior, last Friday morning.

Joseph, aged nine, and George, five, who were alone with their 58-year-old grandmother at the time, kept cool heads, dialled 999 and asked for an ambulance.

And until it arrived they carried out detailed instructions relayed to them on the phone by a control assistant based at ambulance headquarters near Worcester.

When paramedics arrived, they found the boys had carried out the instructions to the letter and had put their unconscious grandmother into the classic recovery position and made sure her airways were clear, allowing her to breath correctly.

Jean was rushed to the Alexandra hospital where it was discovered she had suffered a stroke.

Recovering at home yesterday she said: "I wouldn't be here now if the boys hadn't done what they did for me."

The youngsters who live with their parents at Shepley Road, Rednal, and who both attend Rednal Hill School were warmly praised by the manager at Bromgrove ambulance station Roger Job. He said: "The youngsters did exactly what they were told to do on the phone and there is no doubt the outcome could have been far worse had they not acted in such a responsible manner. We are all extremely proud of them."

The boys' mum Tracey, was told of her mother's illness and her boys' heroic act by a paramedic who phoned her.

"I'm just so proud of them both," she said.

When she has fully recovered Jean plans to treat her grandchildren.

George has a remote control car lined up, but Joseph said simply: "I've already got what I want, my grandmother."
