Pre-season friendly

IN a hard-fought match at Walshes Meadow, Stourport ran out comfortable winners.

The team which replaced Rovers in the Dr Martens League deserved the victory.

Paul Lloyd struck the first shot of the match in the opening minute as Rovers settled quickly.

In the ninth minute Stourport's Simon Marsh was caught by the elbow of Morgan Brookes. The referee immediately asked the visitors to substitute the Rovers player.

Matt Coppin then fired just wide after cutting inside two defenders. But Stourport - fielding ten ex-Rovers players - started to take control.

Ross Knight's cross on 36 minutes allowed an unmarked Adrian Cooper to head home from ten yards.

Kevin Banner saw an effort drift wide as Rovers attempted a quick equaliser.

But they were dealt a killer blow right on the stroke of half time when Knight fed Simon Marsh who headed into the net.

The opening ten minutes of the second half was end to end. Steve Frost shot over the bar before Adam Nicholls and Asa Charlton forced Jim McGettrick into good saves.

On the hour, Stourport made it 3-0 when a defensive mix-up allowed Willie Dunn to tap the ball into the unguarded goal.

A minute later it should have been 4-0 but Jamie Hart put his effort wide. On 82 minutes an excellent double save from McGettrick spared Rovers' blushes.

Their best move saw Fraser McHugh set up Coppin whose pass was inch perfect for Banner but Rob Clarke saved well and then kept out Chris Porter's follow up.
