THE media can be a power for good, as well as a power for evil. Remember the days of yesteryear, when no public place was safe from choking tobacco fumes? A visit to the cinema, when the film was obscured by clouds of smoke; ruined meals in restaurants/cafes, public transport too being a serious health hazard?
Sensible legislation, in respect of advertising, has seen the use of tobacco become socially unacceptable. People are now aware of health risks and few people smoke.
However, addiction to alcohol is an even greater threat to our nation's health and welfare.
The incidence of alcohol-related crime is a growing problem at a time of under-resourced police services.
Drunken young people on our streets, now that alcohol is readily available, are a growing menace.
The effects of alcohol abuse on families is as keenly felt in the 21st century as it was in the 19th century.
Yet no restrictions seemingly are placed on advertising.
May we urge concerned people to complain, when offended, to their MPs and also to the Advertising Standards Authority, 7 Torrington Place, London WC1E 7HU.
